I believe that searching for the perfect functional form requires imagination, but also patience. Sometimes you have to forget what you know and look for something new. You also need to spend more time on something that usually takes a short time. Other times, it is enough to flip something upside-down to broaden your perspective and see a detail that you haven’t seen before.
